[ARCHIVED] West Melbourne Police Department Invites Public Comment During Accreditation Process

The West Melbourne Police Department is inviting public comment as the Department proceeds through its initial accreditation process. Accreditation is a certification issued by an independent reviewing authority confirming that an entity has met specific requirements and prescribed standards of excellence.
The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. (CFA) is the accrediting body for law enforcement agencies in the State of Florida. Accreditation requires consistency, transparency and accountability, which is confirmed through an on-site assessment. To ensure compliance with accreditation standards, assessors review written materials, interview agency members, and observe issued equipment and facilities.

On April 19-21, 2016, three assessors will confirm West Melbourne Police Department’s compliance with nearly 260 CFA accreditation standards. The assessment team is comprised of law enforcement practitioners from various law enforcement agencies across Florida. The team leader is Investigator Gary Robinson of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, along with Accreditation Manager Michelle Sirois of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, and Captain Burt Himmer of the Florida Department of Financial Services, Division of Insurance Fraud. A mock assessment was conducted on February 9-11, 2016 and that assessment team consisted of team leader Special Agent Tim Elder of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Accreditation Manager Tammy King of the Rockledge Police Department, and Accreditation Manager Sam Dobson of the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department.

Accreditation affirms the Department’s continued commitment to professional excellence and increases the Department’s ability to fulfill its mission of serving and safeguarding the public and businesses operating in the City of West Melbourne.
