[ARCHIVED] City Manager's Update on COVID-19 for August 26

This COVID-19 operational update is for the fourteen days from Thursday August 13 through Wednesday August 26.

Brevard Public School students returned to school on Monday August 24 for the first time since last Spring. Normal first week of school traffic concerns along Wingate Boulevard seemed much abated compared to prior years, so I would surmise that there is probably a fair number of students attending remotely due to COVID-19 parental concerns.

Over the past two weeks, I participated in several conference calls with the Brevard County Emergency Operations Center, and the Space Coast County, City and Town Managers group. I have scheduled the next County, City and Town Manager COVID-19 conference call for September 3. In these calls, the municipal and county managers share current information and planned actions related to each local government’s evolving responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the ‘essential businesses’ identified in the City Council’s Emergency Masking Ordinance No. 2020-05 had requested reasonable advance notice if I was going to administratively extend the requirements of the ordinance for an additional week. In response, today, in accordance with the authority granted the City Manager in Section 11 of the West Melbourne Emergency Masking Ordinance No. 2020-05, I administratively extended the City Council’s Emergency Masking Ordinance for an additional week, from an original expiration on August 31 to a new expiration at midnight on September 7. In accordance with the requirements of Section 11, this one week extension has been filed with the City Clerk and posted on the City’s web site.
